If you are a zombie movies fan than you`ll have a great time watching this movie. This high budget movie might not be the most artistic movie in 2013, but at the same time considering the genre it's not made to be one. World War Z is full of massive scenes and pretty awesome action scenes supported by a top movie superstar such as Brad Pitt. All in all a descent movie and probably one of the best in the zombie genre.

greatest world war one movies ever made

"The war that will end all wars" as it was known at that time, served as an inspiration for many great movie makers. Here follows a list of the best world war one movies.

The perfect movie to start a list such as this. This is the story about an American officer that falls in love in a British nurse. Gary Cooper gives a legendary performance in this classic.

9. Aces High (1976)

An idealist arrives at the Western front to fight the air war against the Germans. What he doesn't know is the life expectancy of a new pilot is and the true colors of war.  Malcolm McDowel and Christopher Plummer put up a great performance in this epic movie. The movie received plenty of great reviews and is considered by many as one of the best air war movie.

8. Sergeant York (1941)

This is the true story about an ordinary man (Alvin York) drafted in world war 1 regardless of his pacifism. Later he proves himself as one of the biggest and most decorated world war one soldiers.

7. War Horse (2011)

Spielberg has contributed a lot to the war movie genre. One of his best movies in this genre is war horse. This is the story about a horse and his young owner caught in the mist of world war one.

6. Joyeux Noel (2005)

Based on real events, this is the true story about a moment of humanity  during the world war one. At the eve of Christmas, the German, the French and the Scottish soldiers and officers, set on a far post of the Western front, get out of their trenches to celebrate Christmas with their enemies. This is probably one of the most underrated world war movies. Great story, great director and great acting.

 5. Gallipoli (1981)

The two best Australian sprinters are sent to fight in Gallipoli against the Turks. There they face all the atrocities and horror that follow war. Directed by the famous Peter Weir with young Mel Gibson in the main role this is one of the best world war one movies ever made. An absolute classic, no world war 1 movie list can be completed with out it.
This is the type of movies that can shake your foundation like no other movie can. Johnny got his gun is the story about a young American soldier who is hit bad by an artillery shell on the last day of world war one.

3. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Once again a movie based on a true story about a British officer who helps the Arabs in their fight against the Turks during world war 1. Lawrence, the British officer whose name is still highly respected among the Arabs.

2. Paths of Glory (1957)

This is a Stanley Kubrick classic with Kirk Douglas in the main role. More than fifty years later the movie still sends a strong message and remains popular. This is probably the best anti - war drama ever made. As once Kirk Douglas said: "I didn't had to wait 50 years to know that paths of glory would always be good".

A true world war one classic. This gruesome, harrowing and morbid tale of war is considered as the best world war one movies ever made. It's reputation as one of the greatest is much deserved and acknowledged by almost everyone who has seen the movie. There aren't too many movies that can be matched with this classic.

Greatest Vietnam War Movies List

This list comprises most of the movies about the war in Vietnam that made a large cinematic and cultural impact, as well as movies that are my personal favorites.

There will be comments on why this and that movie are not on the list, and let me tell right away that the main criteria maintained during the making of this list is the critical and public acceptance of the films, their impact on cinematography and did I mention my personal taste ? :) So, even though "Forest Gump" is one of my favorite movies of all time, in any category, and they did take long walks throughout Vietnamese countryside "...and we was always looking for a guy named 'Charlie'", there is no place for Forest on this list simply because the story does not revolve around the war or the consequences of it, it just uses it as a background.
So, without further ado, here's my list of the greatest movies about the war in Vietnam, in no particular order.

We Were Soldiers (2002)

It's a story of the first direct conflict between the American and the North Vietnamese armies and how the soldiers on both sides and their families went through it.

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

A new DJ, Adrian Cronauer, is sent in Saigon to work in the Army Forces Radio Service. His approach is unorthodox and completely opposite than that of his predecessors, with using humor, playing tunes that have not been officially sanctioned by the authorities, and his trade mark - announcing every broadcast with loud "Goooooood morning, Vietnaaaaam", which quickly brings him popularity among the listeners, but also troubles with superiors.

Hamburger Hill (1987)

This is one of the most realistic interpretations of one bloodiest battles fought in the Vietnam. The movie is about a platoon fighting in the battle over Hill 937 aka Hamburger Hill. During the battle both sides incur heavy losses. Even though that the director Irvin did not had big budget as Coppola had for Apocalypse Now it still did a great job. The movie was well received both with the audience as well as with the critics. Fans of Vietnam war movies will have a great time with it.

Platoon (1986)

The first installment of Oliver Stone's so called 'Vietnam Trilogy'. It tells the story of Chris Taylor, a young student who drops out of college so he can volunteer for combat in Vietnam. He is assigned to Bravo Company, a colorful group of people led by two officers with completely opposite characters - the ill tempered and corrupted Sgt. Barnes and the calm Sgt. Elias. Taylor is soon faced with all the dreadfulness of war and man.

Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

The second movie in Stone's 'Vietnam Trilogy'. It's a story of a small-town athlete, Ron Kovic, who enlists with the Marine Core to fight in Vietnam. His patriotic enthusiasm runs out after he accidentally kills one of his own men and then he too is shot and left paralyzed. After returning home, the downward spiral in his life goes on, but ultimately he comes out of the abyss and becomes an anti-war activist.

Casualties of War (1989)

I see this movie as the younger twin of Platoon. I can never decide which one is better - Casualties... for the better storytelling or the Platoon for the cooler, stoner-like characters. The movie is based upon a real event that took place in the deepest jungles of Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. A young Vietnamese girl is been kidnapped by an American squadron in an act of revenge for the loss of their comrade and is being repeatedly tortured and rapped by the soldiers. Max Eriksson is the only one who refuses to participate in these actions and tries to see that justice is done.

The Deer Hunter (1978)

An epic heartbreaking portrayal of the Vietnam War impact on the American working class citizen. Young steel workers from a small industrial town in Pennsylvania, Michael, Steven and Nick, enlist to fight in the Vietnam War. Just before they are shipped off to South East Asia, Steven is having a wedding which is also a farewell party for the three of them. Once in Vietnam, they go through rel hell when they are captured by the Vietcong and kept in a prison camp where they are forced to play Russian roulette against each other.

Apocalypse Now (1979)

U.S. Army Captain Benjamin Willard is sent in a black non-official operation to find veteran colonel Kurtz who is believed to be gone rogue. Col. Kurtz is thought to be hiding deep into the jungle, across the Vietnam-Cambodian border, where he has established himself as a god upon the local tribes. Willard's mission is to find and assassinate Kurtz, but along his way he encounters many bizarre people and situations.

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

The story follows U.S. Marines during the height of the Vietnam War, from their ruthless training in boot camp to the battlefield in Vietnam. the first part of the movie is set in Parris Island training camp where young recruits get their first lessons in warfare from the unforgiving drill Sergeant Hartman. The second part shows the viewer the bloody conflict in Vietnam, seen through the eyes of now completely indoctrinated marines.

Honorable mention:

Rescue Dawn (2006)
The Siege of Firebase Gloria (1989)
Eastern Condors (1987)
Bat*21 (1988)

Well, that's my list, and like it or not, that's all I have to say about the war in Vietnam (pun intended :) ).

Best Movies About D-Day

Today is D-Day. Well it was, sixty nine years ago on this day, when the allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in order to execute what would become one of the greatest military operations in history.

When it comes to European front during World War II, there are few battles that could be deemed as decisive for the final outcome of the war. One of them is the Battle of Stalingrad. Marked by constant close-quarters combat and lack of regard for military and civilian casualties, it is among the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare. The heavy losses inflicted on the German army make it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the whole war. Which leads us to the second large battle on the Eastern front - the Battle of Kursk which would be one of the greatest armored clashes ever and would give momentum to the Soviet counteroffensive.
The third operation is the D-Day Landings, or the Normandy landings, code named Operation Neptune. Part of the larger Operation Overlord, D-Day marked the beginning of western allies' counteroffensive and the end of Nazi rule in Europe.
Many movies were made about these - and other - battles of WWII, and here are only some of them, dedicated to D-Day.

Ike: Countdown to D-Day (2004)

It's hard to imagine Tom Selleck as a mustache-less supreme commander of allied forces, but somehow he pulled it off.
The main emphasis in this movie is Gen. Eisenhower and the difficult decisions he had to make while dealing with the varied personalities of his subordinates, including U.S. Gen. George S. Patton, British Gen. Bernard Montgomery and French resistance leader - Gen. Charles De Gaulle, as well as making some hard political decisions, and all that while being in direct conflict with the weather conditions. Not to mention the Germans...

The Longest Day (1962)

The D-DAY events, told both from both the Allied as well as the German side. It is a cult war movie with some of the greatest movie start of that time in it.

The Big Red One (1980)

A sergeant and his soldiers do their best to survive the second world war. From North Africa, Sicily, and then on to Omaha Beach at the start of the Battle of Normandy as they are sent from one battle to another over and over.

Red Ball Express (1952)

Red Ball Express is a World War II movie based on the real Red Ball Express convoys that supplied allied forces after the Normandy Landings on D-Day.
Moving forward with the invasion of France, in August 1944 Gen. Patton led his Third army so far toward Paris that it is nearly impossible for it to be supplied. To keep the momentum of the operation, an elite military truck route is established by the Allied HQ, called Red Ball Express. One platoon of this convoy faces increasingly dangerous missions, including German resistance, minefields, and even private enmities.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Saving Private Ryan is one of the best movies in 1998. The movie was awarded with five Oscars and many more international awards. It is one of the best war movies made in the last twenty years. When it comes to realism in war movies it doesn`t get any better than this. Saving Private Ryan set new standards for realism in war movies.

Soon after the D-day, a small unit of US soldiers are sent on a mission to retrieve pvt. James Ryan whose four brothers were killed in action.

Band of Brothers (2001)

Granted, this is not a feature length film, but this Spielberg/Hanks short series about the fictional Easy Company of the US Army 101st Airborne division and their mission in WWII Europe from Operation Overlord (Normandy Landing) through V-J Day is arguably one of the - or possibly THE - best depiction of war, whether be it on the small or on the silver screen.
